Norwegian-American Immigrant Ancestors
2025 marked 200 years since the first ship sailed from Norway to the United States of America, carrying emigrants in search of a new home. Since then, thousands of people have made the journey, and most have stayed, built homes, and started families in their new country. Here is a list of 45 people, directly related to Rose, who were born in Norway and died in the United States:
Father’s side: Karl Eide and ancestors:
1879 – Year of Immigration
- Nils Eide was born 15 MAR 1854 in Hosanger, Hordaland, Norway. He died on 30 JULY 1941 in Redwood County, Minnesota, USA. He was 25 years old when he immigrated, and his listed immigration year of 1879 appears on all U.S. Census records. His Norwegian birth records list his birthdate as 15 MAR 1854, but he lists June 1857 in his census and death records. Some census records list “Nils” and some list “Nels”. His death record lists Nels Eide. I believe this record aligns with our family records because, in 1903, when Sevelina and Ingeborg sailed to the USA for the first time, they listed their destination as Wood Lake, Minnesota, which was near his home. (He was Karl’s father’s uncle.)
1892 – Immigrated 9 MAY 1892 on the S.S. Numidian, arriving in Quebec, Canada, with a destination of Radcliff, Iowa, USA.
- Rasmus Mikkelsen Eikanger was born 22 APR 1866 in Nedre Eikanger, Hordaland, Norway. He died in 1946 in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was 26 years old when he arrived in Quebec, Canada, on 9 May 1892 with his brothers listed below. He returned to Norway and married in 1911, having six children. After 1 child died in 1925, the whole family emigrated to Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1927 (See below). (He was Karl’s mother’s first cousin)
- Ole Mikkelson Eikanger was born 20 DEC 1872 in Nedre Eikanger, Hordaland, Norway. He died 9 JUN 1946 in Malheur County, Oregon, USA. (He was Karl’s mother’s first cousin)
- Lai (Olai) Mikkelson *Ekanger was born 23 DEC 1874 in Nedre Eikanger, Hordaland, Norway. He died 3 AUG 1939 in Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Idaho, USA. (He was Karl’s mother’s first cousin)
- Carl Mikkal Ekanger was born 20 AUG 1877 in Nedre Eikanger, Hordaland, Norway. He died 1 MAR 1966 in Humboldt, Minnehaha, South Dakota, USA. Also listed on the manifest were Olav Ekanger (age 16) and Arne M. Molvik (age 21), but they returned to Norway and did not immigrate to the United States. (They were not siblings but may be cousins).
- Later, other Eikanger siblings immigrated: Baste Ekanger (1886-1947) arrived in 1904; Malina (Malena) (1879-1961) arrived in 1905, coming with Ingvald Eide; and Kristian Ekanger (1890-1925) arrived in 1907. See below for details.
